Hot Dog Mummies for Halloween

Hot dogs wrapped in strips of puff pastry like bandages, with two eyes peeking out through a gap: mummies are the easiest savory bite for a Halloween party, and kids can help wrap them. The eyes are two dots of mayonnaise with a little piece of black olive as the pupil, so everything stays savory. If you prefer the candy eyes sold at baking supply stores, they stick on with the same dot of mayonnaise.
Ingredients
- 8 hot dogs (frankfurters)
- 1 sheet puff pastry
- 1 egg, for brushing
- Mayonnaise
- 2 or 3 pitted black olives
- Optional: edible candy eyes
- Mustard or ketchup, for serving
Method
- 1
Preheat the oven to 200 °C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Pat the hot dogs dry with paper towels: if they are damp, the pastry won't stick.
- 2
Roll out the well-chilled puff pastry and cut it into strips 1 cm wide.
- 3
Wrap each hot dog with two or three strips, crossing them slightly like bandages and leaving a 1 cm gap near one end: that gap is the face. Press the ends of the strips so they don't come loose.
- 4
Arrange the mummies on the baking sheet, spaced apart, and brush the pastry with beaten egg without touching the hot dog.
- 5
Bake for 15-20 minutes, until the pastry is puffed and golden. Let cool for 5 minutes.
- 6
Once the mummies are warm rather than hot, place two dots of mayonnaise in the gap and a small piece of black olive on each as the pupil. If they are still hot, the mayonnaise melts and runs. Serve with mustard or ketchup.
